Creation from the deep, not from nothing

Before creation, darkness covered 'Tehom,' the deep, a name that recalls Babylon's Tiamat. God's spirit hovered over it like a mother bird over her nest.

Creation means making room for light and life.

Dig deeper

Theologian Catherine Keller proposes creatio ex profundis, creation out of the deep. In Noah's flood, the fountains of Tehom burst forth again. God creates by separating, pushing back darkness, and humans are called to imitate that sacred act of making space.
