Lamentations really begins with 'How?'
The Hebrew title of Lamentations is eichah, 'how.' Translating it as a stoic 'alas' misses the point: it's a cry of shock, desperation, and demand.

The 'how' introduces three of the book's five poems. It points to a past of violence, a present of torment, and a future without clear answers, voiced by Daughter Zion, the ruined city personified as a woman with no one to comfort her.
