Back to Eden

In Eden, God says it's not good for the human to be alone. The Song celebrates partnership for its own sake, not for children, and recreates a garden of harmony.

'Love is as fierce as death.'

Scholar Phyllis Trible shows how the Song evokes Eden. Couples can recreate that garden even in a world of war and defeat. 'Many waters cannot quench love.' Deuteronomy's love is loyalty; Leviticus's love is care for others; the Song's love defies death.
