'I am black and beautiful'

The Song of Songs opens with a young woman longing for her lover's kisses. Hers is the voice we hear most in this sensual duet.

Desire is celebrated for its own sake.

Dig deeper

The Song celebrates a love that doesn't culminate in marriage or children, but in the immediate intimacy of two lovers. It's hard to read it simply as a prelude to procreation; physical desire here is an end in itself.
