Biblical authors reworked their materials in two ways: writing alternative versions that subvert older ones, and adding lines that connect and harmonize them.

The older Documentary Hypothesis divided Genesis into separate sources (J, E, P, D) combined by a compiler. Many scholars, especially in Europe, now favor a model of gradual supplementation, though 'Neo-Documentarians' defend the older approach.
