A secret night ride around Jerusalem's ruins
Days after arriving from Persia, Nehemiah slipped out at night to inspect Jerusalem's walls. The rubble was so bad he had to dismount and walk.

Dig deeper
Only a few hundred people lived in Jerusalem then, most of them poor. The next morning, Nehemiah called a public assembly: 'Come, let us rebuild the wall, so that we may no longer suffer disgrace.'
