Without triumphs, no crushing defeat

Had Israel kept expanding without long experiences of subjugation, it would never have produced literature to hold together a defeated people.

Glory made the fall meaningful.

But the defeat would have been less crushing without the earlier triumphs that seemed to promise a bright future.
